So-called Non-lethal Weapons
Okay, what does a police officer need with a weapon that will electrocute someone at 30 meters? This new wireless taser is basically a combination of the ideas of a rubber bullet and a stun-gun. As said in the video it will not only hurt a whole lot when it hits you, but you're shocked for 20 seconds, leaving you convulsing on the ground and unable to move. Not only that, but if you attempt to pull it out, your hand gets a nasty shock as well.
Currently, a conventional taser has an effective range of about 10 meters. This distance would take an average person at least a second or so to cover at full sprinting speed. Add in acceleration and you're up to about two seconds. This is just to get from 10m away to an officer's face.
Now, while this doesn't seem like much time, you need to remember that it only takes a fraction of a second to pull the trigger of a taser. If a person is doing something that would warrant the use of weapon, and they're that close already, the officer is already likely to have it drawn and ready.
But what if the suspect is 30 meters away? Well, now you have five seconds or so before your target can get to you, so it's obviously not needed as a self defense weapon. They're too far away to be of any harm to you.
Well, what if they're threatening someone else? Well, I don't think pointing a 12 gauge shotgun at them is going to help matters too much. This system isn't going to be accurate enough to take out someone that's holding a hostage, so that's out.
So, what else could this be used for? Perhaps it will be used in the same manner that rubber bullets are being used now? At the moment this so-called "nonlethal" weapon is used more and more against non-violent protesters.
The problem is that police seem to have the mindset of "these weapons aren't normally lethal so they're okay to use against people." They seem to forget that they are still weapons, and the people they're firing at are unarmed civilians, most of whom are not being violent. That is, not violent, unless there's some planted police provoker there.
Just imagine the scene. A wall of police marching down the street with riot shields and ski-masks. Just behind them are the second line, formally armed with rubber bullets, they are now armed with the new 30m range wireless taser. Again and again they fire into the crowd, shocking people for a full 20 seconds after getting hit with a device that hurts, alot.
What more, these devices are fired from any 12 gauge shotgun. These guns are carried in every police car already. Aside from color, they also look just like a normal shotgun bullet, so there is a chance the wrong ammo could be loaded and fired, resulting in death or serious injury, and in the scenario above, it would be nearly impossible to tell who fired the wrong shell.
Use of these "non-lethal" weapons against civilians is wrong by any measure , because they are still weapons. They give the wrong impression to the people using them. They're becoming a 'first response' choice more and more. It has to stop!
